The PGA of Minigolf
The U.S. ProMiniGolf Association Represents The United States In The World Minigolf Sports Federation
The U.S. ProMiniGolf Association is the sole recognized national affiliate representing the United States
within the World Minigolf Sports Federation. Bob Detwiler is the President and official delegate from this country to the Federation Council.
The U.S. ProMiniGolf Association recognizes and sanctions the Masters National ProMiniGolf Championship held
in Myrtle Beach, SC, the fourth week of each September, as the official national championship forum whereby the top professional minigolfers in America come together
in tournament play to decide who shall be the new national prominigolf champions. Six sanctioned prominigolf tournaments are held at the Masters National events that
week.
Masters National
Championship - overall national championship.
Ladies Tournament - number one female prominigolfer in America.
Junior Championship - number one junior prominigolfer for players 12
and under.
Senior Division Championship - number one Senior prominigolfer for
players 50 and over.
Amateur Division Championship - number one Amateur prominigolfer.
Masters National American Cup - showcases the best American players
(TEAM USA) in competition against the best European players.
The U.S. ProMiniGolf Association is working to set up sanctioned
local, state and regional tournaments in as many different states as possible beginning in the year 2000, with local winners advancing to state and regional events,
while state and regional winners automatically advance to the national championship. Top winners from the national championship will then be selected for TEAM USA to
represent America in the Minigolf World Championship.
Team USA Selection
While many WMF and international competitions reward the top players on an individual level, most (including World Championships) are primarily TEAM Competitions.
Just like Basketball, Soccer and Hockey, the players that are selected for Team USA squads are the players which their National Association feel gives THE TEAM the
best opportunity to win or be competitive.
The following are the main criteria used in the USPMGA -Team USA selection process (in no particular order):
Tournament Results: Performance in all USPMGA-Sanctioned Tournaments are considered, with special emphasis on USPMGA Majors (U.S. Open and Masters) and the
tournaments played at Official Team USA Training Centers.
Experience in International Competitions: Past experience playing on WMF approved surfaces shortens the amount of "teaching" done at competitions, and allows the
team members and coaches to concentrate more on actual training.
Physical and Mental Fitness: Players should be in good general health, both physically and mentally, to be able to handle the precision and pressure required to
play well. All Team USA Players and prospective players are subject to random drug testing, at the player's cost.
Teamwork and Sportsmanship: The players selected need to work together as a cohesive unit, so they must display good teamwork and sportsmanship to each other,
plus they must be respectful to the coaches, Team USA officials, as well as the players and representatives from other nations. After all, they are representing the
United States and the Sport of Minigolf.
Selection for Team USA is handled by USPMGA President Robert Detwiler. Though Mr. Detwiler considers input from other USPMGA Officials, Team USA Coaches and past
Team USA Players, it is still ultimately his decision as to who is selected to play for Team USA.
The U.S. ProMiniGolf Association staff are determined to build the U.S.A. program into a world model for how
best to promote, cultivate, develop and leverage player and public interests in this sport. When the moment finally comes that prominigolf is played at the World
Games or even at the Olympics, we all want the U.S.A. team and the U.S.A. program to be so strong and competitive that we take the first gold medals in prominigolf
history at each event.
